Programs
One of the hallmarks of a Montessori education is the three-year cycle. Gloria Dei Montessori School organizes students by age into the following programs:
Toddler — 18 months to 3 years
Primary — 3 to 6 years
Lower Elementary — 6 to 9 years
Upper Elementary — 9 to 12 years
This offers several benefits:
Children need time to become comfortable in their learning environment. Spending several years in the same classroom, the child can fully acclimate to their environment, which encourages growth, experimentation, and improved mastery of skills and materials.
All children are different and best learn at their own pace. With a the three-year cycle, learners have the flexibility to either focus intensely on or step away from a subject for extended periods as their interest and readiness dictate.
Your child will have the same teacher for several years. The teacher can develop a deep appreciation of your child's learning style and developmental progess: information which can be used to tailor the learning environment to your child's needs.
As children work their way through the three-year cycle, they take on different roles in the classroom. The older children have the opportunity to be leaders, mentors, and teachers to the younger students. This mutually beneficial arrangement builds confidence at all ages, encourages development of a joy of learning, and helps academic performance.
